The lighted tractor parade in Centralia, WA.

As kids we were allowed to open one gift on Christmas Eve before going to bed. It was always new pajamas that we then got to wear that night!

We attend a church service every Christmas Eve. Standing with my children and their children and singing "O Come, All Ye Faithful," as the organ, bells, and orchestra play - that's one of the highlights of the year for me!

A strange one in Oly—The Olympia Toy Run. Many streets close down for a crazy number of motorcycles and all donations go to Salvation Army. Fun to watch, but bring your ear plugs!

We drive up to the southern end of the Olympic National Forest, along the Skokomish River, and cut down a tree on Forest Service land. On the way back we stop at the place where they make Olympic Mountain Ice Cream and stock up on our favorites (the Whiskey Praline can't be beat...and I get it all to myself!).

A German Christmas tradition our family does every year is hide a pickle ornament in the tree on Christmas Eve. Whoever finds the pickle gets to hide the pickle the next year. It's a big deal.

Do you have any particularly special Christmas memories? (From childhood or beyond)

One year, much to Santa's dismay, I slept next to the Christmas tree in a sleeping bag. I finally fell asleep around 3 am and woke up at 6 am ... somehow Santa evaded my night watch and his presents still arrived.

Tell us about a memorable Christmas gift you have either given or received.

In 1995 Santa brought us our first desktop Apple computer. Coincidentally 1996 became a year centered around "learning to share" it was the gift that kept on giving.

We watch this Christmas movie every year:

MUPPET CHRISTMAS CAROL!!!!

What is on your Christmas table every year, without fail?

Christmas cookies (Honestly we've done everything from Lamb Roast to Chinese take-out so this one is tough.)

Oh man, there's so many. My family is big on traditions, so I love this time of year and the memories it brings. One tradition that we used to do (that I love) was getting ornaments that symbolized our year. I have a few volleyball and basketball players, but even have Santa driving a car to symbolize getting my license and a piano for when I was taking piano lessons. It's special to look back and remember what happened that year. We also open one present on Christmas Eve and would have my grandparents over for appetizers and ornament opening after church.

My brother Nate and I slept by the fireplace waiting for Santa Clause when we were 5 or 6. We put cookies and milk out, but discovered my parents took bites out of them.

One year my parents surprised us by taking us to Leavenworth and we stayed at the Enzian Inn. Great memories!

Reading the Polar Express and listening to it on tape.

Christmas Lights in the Neighborhood.jpg

Another tradition we do every year is pile into my family's suburban and drive to the good neighborhoods that have a lot of Christmas lights. We listen to Christmas music on the radio and bring hot chocolate and sugar cookies. It's the best!

The Christmas Ships! The Argosy Christmas Chips dock offshore, and a Coventry choir sings carols to the crowd on the beach. A bonfire on the sand keeps everyone toasty, and following is a party at the Mt. Baker Community Center.

Every Christmas Eve the wife and I cuddle up, open a fancy bottle of champagne, nibble spiced meats and delicate cheese -- as I raucously cackle at National Lampoons Christmas Vacation!

For many years now, a friend and I have a silly tradition of passing a winning bottle top back and forth. The more random the exchange the better! One year, I had it wrapped by a local jewelry store, tagging it to her from her husband and secretly slipped it under their tree. They still talk about the surprise of the “gift” and the laughter that ensued once she opened it.

My family has always opened gifts on Christmas Eve. My mom hosts Christmas dinner so we have a nice quiet breakfast on Christmas morning then get ready for company. It’s much more relaxing for everyone!

Do you have any particularly special Christmas memories? (From childhood or beyond)

There are a few that come to mind: The year Christmas dinner ended with a big dance party in the living room. The year 5-year old Matthew threw up all over the couch and floor in my parent’s living room. And it used to be a more consistent tradition to go see a movie with all the cousins after dinner!
